2010年8月15日凌晨，寂静的东京站月台突然驶来一列老旧的列车。车上载满二战期间战死在南太平洋的日军亡灵，借着终战周年纪念日之际，他们得以重返故土，在短短的几小时内见证祖国65年来的沧桑巨变。他们有的来到靖国神社前，见到当年的伙伴，又因政客的畏缩而愤慨；有的寻找年轻时的画作，竭力探寻昔日爱人的影子；有的重返家中，和业已失明的妻子奏响久违的协奏曲；有的则见到一曾美丽而如今奄奄一息的妹妹，更见证着外甥的堕落与无情。他们曾为了祖国的荣誉奔赴战场，而如今心中思绪万千…… 　　本片根据已故作家棟田博1955年发表的短篇小说《来自塞班岛的列车（サイパンから来た列車）》改编。
